The Sermon on the Mount  - Week 6 Matt 6:1-8 & 16-18

Welcome to Sunday Focus. We pray you will be blessed as you listen to the songs and read the Word of God.

God, the giver of life,
whose Holy Spirit wells up within your Church:
by the Spirit’s gifts equip us to live the gospel of Christ
and make us eager to do your will,
that we may share with the whole creation
the joys of eternal life;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.

Hymn - O Worship The King

Song -  Men of Faith

Lord God, You are the Creator.
You spoke and brought all things into existence.
We give You thanks for the beauty of autumn days and for the provision of Your harvest. You also made each and every one of us, creating us uniquely.
Thank You for all the different gifts You have given us so we can all play a part
in the building of Your Church here on earth, as the body of Christ.

We are sorry for the times that we don't use our gifts
or when we forget to do what You want us to do.
We are also sorry for the wrong things we have done, said or even thought this past week. Please help us to love You and follow You more nearly, day by day.

We thank You for the people in our lives that are special to us
and for the places You made that we love to visit.

We thank You that You are a great big God and that You hold us in your hands,
and because of that, we can take comfort, knowing You will always be with us and help us.
You are sovereign God; You know all things from the beginning to the end.
Thank You that we can trust in You. Help us to do so more and more.

Most of all, we give You thanks for giving us Your son, Jesus,
who died on the cross in our place for our sins
so that one day we can be made perfect with You in heaven.
And we thank You that You have given us the Holy Spirit to be our helper.
Please help us to share this good news of what You have done with others as we step into a new week.
In Jesus' name. Amen.

Bible Reading

Matthew 6:1-8

Giving to the Needy

6 “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.

2 “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honoured by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

Prayer

5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

Matthew 6: 16-18
Fasting

16 “When you fast, do not look sombre as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18 so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

Song -  There is a Hope

Our Father, who art in heaven,

Hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come.
Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors
And lead us not into temptation
But deliver us from evil.
For yours is the kingdom, the power and the glory.
Forever.
Amen

Hymn -  Jesus Is Lord

Romans 15:13
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing,
so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.

Amen
